Topics

Topics will include, but are not limited to:

• Molecular virology and pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2 infection
• Host immunology in response to SARS-CoV-2 infection
• COVID-19 clinical outcomes and health disparities
• Variation in host responses to SARS-CoV-2
• Lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic and pandemic preparedness
• Vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics
• COVID-19 public health policies
• Data science advances for understanding and managing the pandemic
• One Health perspectives
• Physical and Engineering Sciences: from understanding SARS-CoV-2 infection to developing vaccines, therapeutics, and detection systems
• Social sciences and modeling 

Registration

Registration is limited to Cornell, Weill Cornell Medicine, and Cornell Tech participants.

• Use your official Cornell email address when registering.
• Non-Cornell participants will be allowed to participate only if supported by a Cornell faculty member. Email: vp_research@cornell.edu for permission to allow a non-Cornell participant.

Sessions over the 2-day period will include a collection of long talks (15 minutes), short talks (8 minutes), and flash talks (3 minutes).

Long and short talks will be selected by the Organizing Committee, but members of the Cornell community should feel free to suggest speakers.

There will be limited time for a few questions immediately after short and long talks, but most audience questions/comments will be reserved to the end of each session when there will be a more generalized discussion period between all the speakers in that session and the audience.

Flash talks will be selected from abstracts, to be submitted no later than 5 pm on Friday October 30th. 

Submit Flash Talk Abstract

Abstracts should be no more than half a page in length (max 30 lines, Arial font, size 11 pt, single-space, half-inch margins all around) and should include the following information:

• Title
• Authors (indicate presenting author and principal investigator)
• Affiliation
• Text of Abstract
• Funding: please indicate if you have been funded by a Cornell seed grant mechanism (from Weill Cornell Medicine, OVPR, Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability, Cornell Center for Social Science, or other)

Submit your abstract via email to vp_research@cornell.edu no later than 5 PM on Friday, October 30th. Abstracts will be distributed to audience members prior to the Summit.

Brainstorming and Discussion Forum

There will be a single closing forum on the afternoon of day 2 of the Summit (November 5th). This forum is intended to create opportunities for collaboration and with the ultimate goal of producing a path towards an “Emerging Infectious Disease Center of Excellence” grant submission between the two campuses.

The format for this forum is currently in preparation, but will consist of the following:

1. Overview of Centers of Excellence Opportunities
2. Summary of each of the Summit Sessions by an expert (rapporteurs)
3. Panel Discussion led by a rapporteur and Session Chairs
4. Identification of potential groups for further interactions

The goal is to identify groups of people for whom further interaction could lead to projects that can be included in a future Center of Excellence grant proposal. These groups will then be invited to apply for internal funding through a pool of money made available by several sources which include (but is not limited to): The Office of Academic Integration and The Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability.
