Cornell University's central Research Development (RD) team promotes and facilitates research and innovation across the Ithaca campus and Cornell Tech.* The team operates within the Office of Sponsored Programs and receives direction from the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation.

Research Development plays a crucial role in supporting and advancing research activities among Cornell's faculty. We provide a range of services to help researchers enhance their skills as effective communicators, grant writers, and advocates for their research.

Our key directives include:

  • Strategic Research Advancement
    • Collaborate with leadership to identify areas of institutional research priorities
    • Manage the Limited Submissions Program
  • Research Development Outreach
    • Disseminate funding and engagement opportunities
    • Promote research activities across campus to foster interdisciplinary research
    • Provide specialized training, such as workshops for early career faculty and agency-specific trainings (e.g., NSF CAREER, DOD, NIH, and Foundations)
  • Proposal Development Services**
    • Help research faculty develop funding priorities and identify potential sponsors
    • Facilitate collaborations
    • Provide assistance with proposal strategy and grantsmanship
    • Assist with the development of Broader Impacts plans and community partnerships
    • Coordinate letters of support and other ancillary documents for proposal submissions
    • Review and edit proposal narratives
    • Help faculty navigate the proposal submission process in coordination with their Research Administrator and Grant & Contract Officer
    • Provide project management services for large, complex grants with budgets of $2M/yr (coordinating milestones, internal deadlines, meetings, e-mail reminders, etc.)

**Proposal development services are primarily for research faculty/teams submitting complex multidisciplinary proposals (e.g., center and training grants). In addition, we work with early career tenure-track faculty submitting to external funding opportunities. As time permits, we also provide support to individual researchers submitting single PI proposals.

*Note to CALS faculty: If you need proposal development support, please contact Tiffany Fleming, Director of Research Development for CALS, at https://cals.cornell.edu/tiffany-fleming.

An initiative launched in 2016 by the Office of Vice President for Research and Innovation (OVPRI) and the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP), Research Development Services (RD) was established to provide dedicated services to help faculty pursue large, collaborative, team science-focused awards. RD catalyzes capacity-building activities, research collaboration, diversity, and pipeline growth, which complements the administrative management of proposals by grant administrators.
